From a pamphlet publicly distributed by the NAACP
entitled "How the National Association for the Advancement of
Colored People Began,” a history was obtained. The NAACP atart~
ed when MARY WHITE OVINGTCH, its first mewber, wet with
WILLIAM ENGLISH WALLING, a columnist, during tie first week of
January in 1909, in a small room of a New York apartment.
The first conference was held on the evening of May 30,
1999, at Cooper Union, New York City. Over 1,000 guests were
invited and the initial conference was considered a success,
It was not until the second conferetce, held in May,
1910, that the group organized a permanent body to be known as
the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
