I. BRIEF SUMMARIZATION OF CONVENTION PROCEEDINGS
June 25th Session
An article appearing on page 6, column one,
of the June 25, 1957, 5 Star Final of the "Detroit News,"
a caily newspaper of general circulation in Detroit,
captioned "NAACP Hits Congress as Leggard" states that
Roy WILKINS, NAACP Executive Secretary, claimed that Congress
ie the chief laggard in the fight for civil rights, at
the opening of the formal sessions of the NAACP Convention
in the Veterans Memorial Building in Detroit on 6/25/57.
WILKINS is also reported in the article as stating that
the CP has "failed again and again" to win support of the
Negroes, The article continues quoting WILKINS "'The
Negro American has no eympathy for Communism whatsoever.
No more than 2,000 Negroes ever were claimed by the
Communists themselves. When you have some 16,000,000
Negroes in America, badgered and harrassed as they ere,
4t 4s a miracle that more have not turned to Commmisn."
WILKINS is also quoted in the ebove article as stating -
that of the NAACP's 350,000 members, “'There may be some
fellow travelers and sympathizers, Dut no known Communists
dn the orgenization.™ _
