PREFACE This is the study of a fanatical, all-~Negro cult in the United States which is based on a distorted interpretation of the religious principles of Islam and is motivated by hatred of the white race. At various times, it has been known as the Muslim Cult of Islam and the Allah Temple of Islam and since December, 1956, Las been described, on a national basis, as the Nation of Islam (NOI). Individual temples of the cult generally have been called Muhammad's Temples of Islam (MTI). Within the past year, considerable publicity has been afforded the Nation of Islam. The writings of its leader, the so-called "Messenger of © Allah," Elijah Muhammad, have anpeared in columne and articles in Negro newspapers; various cult leaders have made televigion appearances; members of the cult have become involved in incidents with police authorities; and | several articles about the cult have appeared in nationally known and widely distributed news magazines. AS aresull of this publicity, a confused picture of the cult has been presented to the public.
