. () I. ORGANIZATION AL Muhammad's Temples of Islam (MTD* | re | - During the period 1934 to 1955, this cult increased the ‘number of its temples in the United States from two to 18. In the past five years, this number ‘has grown to 30, not counting numerous undesignated groups of Negroes who | regularly meet and study the teachings of the "Messenger." No explanation has been given for Elijah Muhammad's numbering of the temples. Some temples are numbered; others are not. When a temple becomes F _ defynct, its number is usually reassigned to a new group. Temple Number 1 is in Detroit. Temple Number a is in Chicago. The rest, through Number W, are | spread throughout many areas of this country. Not all of these are vibrant centers | of cult activity. Of the 30 numerically designated temples, seven have fewer than 30 active members. One has no members at all. Actually, the most active temples are located in the following cities: Chicago, Washington, D. C., Los Angeles, Detroit, New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Milwaukee, and Baltimore.
