Nobody feels imposed ypon and our relationship is better.” Inka continued her education at Berkeley and as a clinical biochemist, owed and di- rected her own laboratory in San Francisco until its sale last year. An involved professional and a lifelong feminist, Inka once served as president of the California Association of Clinical Lab- oratories, was once president of the Analy- tical Psychology Club and of the San Fran- eisco Soroptimist Club and was a board mem-. ber of the American Association of Bioanae lysts. Under her electric spell, those ef us who attended that first meeting--only out of curlosity--suddenly found ourselves accepting multiple NOW positions and making total commitments of time end energy. Thereafter, my contact with Inka vas sporadic, but always incredibly stimlat- ing. As I knew her, she was a woman of charismatic warnth and vivacity, who could | speak with insight and eloquence on a Ren- {[ alssance-range of interests--music, art, poetry, politics, history (women's parti- cularly), psychology, Mothers Alone Work-~ ing, the Flower Children of Haight-Ashbury, what happened yesterday and what might hap- | pen tomorrow, A rare woman, a woman with a special magic, end a demanding woman, She demanded participation as / complete as her owne She was not a faultless woman. Some- times imperious, always inpatient with de- tails and often impetuous, she could and did foul up royally. But she was always forgivable, perhaps because one also caught fleeting glimpses of her as she ence described herself: “Here I come, Joan of Arc on her pony!" Perpetually a little young yet--and humanly impulsive. A first heart attack more than a year ago sharply curtailed her activities. I {ng under the constraints her illness ime posed on her characteristic life style. Of her many activities, she once told an interviewer, “I'm not altruistic. I get pleasure out of these projects, Contribu- ting is what life fs. Seamus calls it *Doing things for enlightened self-inter- est," and he's right.
