OVEN LLTTIMORE was born on July 29, 1900 in Washington, D. C.
In his early childhood he lived with his parents in Paoyingfu,
China. This city was 90 miles south of Peking (now Poiping).
Ho was oducated in his formative yeurs by his parents and studicd
French and Germen from infancy in addition to the usual grade school
subjects. ifs first formal seheoling occurred at the age of 13,
when his parents placed him in the College Classiquo Cantonalc,

While visiting in England during his sunmer vacation of 1914,
World War I broko cut and his parents placed him in St. Sees
School, Cumberland. Ic remained in this institution froin January
1915 until 1919, when ha returned te China and obtained his first
position in business.
He hed no colloge education. His training in tho English School
had been largaly elassiesl ecollesy preps aratory work, with a heavy
omphasis on Gre sk and Latin. Ue worked in business in China for. a
period of ten years, but did not advise the informant as to the
nature of the business, nor his position therain. In 19295, he
was granted a fellowship for travel and resourch in Monechuria by
the Social Sciones Research Council. In view of his lack of a
formal college education, the SSRC arrenged for him to spond six
