so that he might leave for China without delay. LATTIMORE's passport was
anended on July 2, 1941, to exclude his wife, ELZANOR HOLGAT? LATTIMORE, and
his son, DAVID LATTIMORE. His passport was renewed on that same date,
This passport, No. 644858, was marked not valid for travel in
any country outside the ‘Jestern Hemisphere exceot China, the Philippice
Islands, and yongkong at that time. Jt was subsequently amended on January
12, 1942, to include travel in India, Rurms, Africae, Igypt, and other
ccuntries en route to the United States.
A notation appeared in LATTI'OR2's passnort file that on September
17, 1942, he submitted a pemnit showing his Selsctive Service Grder “0. 12875,
Serial Mo. T1273, classification 3-1, authorizing his aosence from the country
from September 23, 1942, to November 23, 1942. The number or location of his
Selective Service 3oard was not shovn, This memorandum indicated thet he
expected to visit Chungking, China, wner2 he would represent the Chinese
Government as a pditical adviser.
On January 1, 194k, a permit from Local foard ve, 3, Baltimor:
county, Baltimore, Haryland, was given to OTSN LATTIHORE to be absent
from the United States in the South Pacific area for 2 griod of six
months where he would represent the Of ice of ‘ar informa@ntion.
LATTIMORS's passport application dated May Lh, 19bh, indicated that
hs: planned to travel to China and the Sevist Union and countries en route,
including Ecypt, Iran and Iraq, in tho capacity of Special Assistant te the
Henorable HEPRY A. ,WALLACS, Vice-President of ths Tnited States.
In addition to the above, the “ashington Fivld Office py letter
dated June 15, 1949, in the instant case, advised that LATTINORE wos issued
passport No. 69026 on May 12, 19L7. In connection with his applicetion f
this passport, LATTIFOrE statcd he wished to go to England to attend an
International Conference of the Royal Institutes of Intor-Czechos lovakic aS a
