It 4s observed that still others have cxpressed the viey that at least sone of
LA“iIUCRE's writings constitute a basis for the belief that said writings are
subtle Russien provaganda, Other persons, who are prominint and nationally
known, and who havc knowm LATTIMORE for many ycars, claim he is not a Communist
or a fellow travelcr but at the same time state they are awarc of the fact
he has been branded as such and attribute some of the suspicion surrounding
LATTIMORE to his positive stand that rcferms are needcd in China and othcr Far
East countries, his views that the Unitcd Statcs should in no minncr furnish
aid to the CHIANG KAI-SHEK Govcrmmcnt and also because he has bccn careless in
choosing some of his associatcs.
It is noted further that LATTIMORE has in the past identified himself
With Communist front groups, has associated with known Communists as well as
with persons suspceted of being engagcd in uespionage activities. He was in-
volved to some cxtent in the PHILIP JAFFE investigation and was a known contact
of soveral subjects im the Gregory case.

It will be noted also from information set out in this report con
corning LATTIMORE!s activitics during the past several months, that LATTIUORE
is xtremcly active and is contactcd, or has been contactcd, by numcrous ner~
sens. Sons of these contacts have not yet been identificd. On the other
hend, it is kmown that some of the versons with whom he has had infreguent
comtact are cithcr suspected ef espicnaze activities or are identifica with
wertnmunist front groups. LATTIMONE's activities betwoen april and July, 1949,
1 been closely observed by T-11 but to date ne tangible evidence of LATTI-
MuuZ being involved in espionage or Communist activity has been discovered.
