The "Yew York Times'', Book Review Section, Sunday, April 10, 1949,
revealed a review of the subject's bock "The Situation in Asia". In this
review, STUATELILLICO, the reviewer of the "Baltimore “vening Sun", states
that it ie doubtful whether the United States has another man so well informed
on northeastern Asia as C¥ii. LATTIOnL. The reviewer states that scores of
students of the Far East are indebted to Mir. LATTIVNO'E for their knowledge,
their theories and their sywpathies. The reviewer continues that LATTINCRE
sees the possibility of Commurist control in many Asiatic Governments, but
less danger of Soviet domination. "Few Asiatics see a Russian threat to their
freedom and livelihood,’ states LATTIUO%!.
"The inclination", LATTINOR’ asserts, "to call Marxism aggressive
and the increasing tendency to take the weight of democratic aid away from
‘urope and America and give it to Russia and Marxism are among the hard facts
of the Asia of today."
Tne reviewer states that many who read "The Situation in Agia"
will feel tiat Mr. IATTINONE is backing the Soviet linc. However, the reviewer
disagrees and states that LATTIMORE has tried to be objective and has painted
the picture as he se7s it. Howcver, often IATTIMO® seems to feel that
Russian policy in Asia is sounder, more astute and/or more progressive than
that adopted by the United States.
