socially, furnished the following information on April 2, 1950:

This infersant had been a membar of the Communist Party in
Germany. vntit be fled that country in 1934 and went to Tendon, After a short
noclod of time in Londen, when he made the acquaintance of BEDNAR 1D Cy CARTER,
then Director of the Institute of Pacific Relations at New York City, he
proceeded to the United States. In the spring of 1935, informant proceeded
+o China on funds obtained from the Institute of Facific Kelations, In the
early summer of 1935 he met LAITLIGIN in the Shensi Prevince of China. For
sone weeks informant lived near LATTING.& and occusionally tock trips with hin,
Luring this time they had many political discussions. Informant stated that
at this time he, himself, although he had broken with the Communist Farty,
rad an "ambivalent" attitude toward the Soviet Systen, believing that it
H coutained some hope for the betterment of the world, Informant stated that
at this period also LATTEUO2] had somevhat the same attitude, but that while
he arpe rently considered that the establicl ment cf the Soviet Refine in Russia
would wltinately be bencficinl to mankind, he felt free to criticize and to
listen toe criticism conceming the Soviet SHEL»
Since the time of his orizinal acausintanceship with LATTINOW,
informant believes that LATI'TMONE has become increasingly proa-Seviet to such a
point of intellectual disci,jine that he now considers him a Coumunist, although
he feels it unlikely th:t he was ever formally registered as «= member of the
Communist Party, As a turning point in LATPL'OsE'S sentiments concerning
Cymunicci, informant cited the fact thet in 1937, in conpany with THCMAS A,
S80 and Nr. and EYSe MUTT LINWATEE, LATTINGRS visited Yenan, the capito
cf the Red fretien In China. according to the informant, Tip OL und his
party wore cxtrencly well treated and fletblered by the pirsons whom tiey met
in Yanan and much impressed by the sicghta they were shown, He felt that tris
