On August 1, 195l, the Vancouver, B, C., Canada, local of the International Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers Union sponsored a concert feat PAUL ROBESON at Peace Arch Park, Hiaine, Washington. HARVEY , Regional Director of the International Mine, vin Mill and Smelter Workers Union, acted as master of ceremonies and intro- duced ROBESON, ROBESON sang numerous songs, the majority of which were written by composers from "Iron Curtain" countries, ROBESON also gave a short reading in Russian. ROBESON made the collection speech and requested that the donations be brought to the speaker's wagon, The response to his appeal was very light and this caused ROBESON to make several coments in an effort to have more individuals donate to his cause. ROBESON then gave a short talk in which he stated he was the executive editor of the newspaper entitled "Freedom" and was a member of the executive committee for the Council on African Affairs. The COUNCIL ON AFRICAN AFFAIRS has been designated by ~ U. S, Attorney General pursuant to Executive Orde ROBESON couplained bitterly over the fact that the State Department has not only refused to issue him a passport but has also denied him permission to leave this country or to even visit such neighboring countries as Canada and Mexico. ROBESON complained that the ordinary citizen does not need a passport to visit either Canada or Mexico. According to ROBESON if he were permitted to go to Europe he could obtain several leading roles in operas which were being presented in Czechoslovakia and other "Iron Curtain" countries. Shh
