BURNHAM advised that "Freedom" was going out of business due to a lack of funds and future issues of the paper were not contemplated. According to BURNHAM, subscribers to "Freedom" were being asked to transfer their subscriptions to the "National Guardian." The 1949 report of the California Committee on Un-American Activities cited the "National Guardian" as a publication launched in New York in 1948 aiming at national circulation which it found to be from its inception notoriously Stalinist in ite staff, writers, management and content.
