C. Status of Health NY 100-25857 CC CNTIAL | Ny On June 21, 1956, ours auRMHAN, Editor of . "Freedom" was contacted under a telephonic pretext by a Special Agent of the FBI. BURNHAM advised that "Freedom" was going out of business due to a lack of funds and future issues of the paper were not contemplated. According to BURNHAM, subscribers to "Freedom" were being asked to transfer their subscriptions to the "National Guardian." The 1949 report of the California Committee on Un-American Activities cited the "National Guardian" as a publication launched in New York in 1948 aiming at national circulation which it found to be from its inception notoriously Stalinist in ite staff, writers, management and content. (1949 report of the California. Senate Fact Finding Committee on Un-American Activities, page 394.) The masthead of the "National Guardian" issue of May 14, 1956, reflects that 1t is published weekly by Weekly Guardian Associates, Ine., 197 East Fourth Street, New York City. at J On ««.::<: that.
