marked not valid for travel in Hungary.
Under current passport regulations, an ordinary
American passport, such as issued to subject, is valid for
a period of two years, at the end of which time it may be ~- .
renewed for an additional two years, making the maximum period
of validity of such a passport four years. At the end of tht
period, a person must file a mew passport application. It is
noted that current passport regulations permit the use of the
passport for lawful travel within the period of its validity
whenever and as often as desired without further prior noti-
fication to the Department of State. ;
Passport application dated July 1, 1958, at New York,
Kew York, reflects that ESLANDA GOG0DE ROBESON was born
December 15, 1896, at Washington, D. C., and maintained permanent
residence at 16 Jumel Terrace, New York, New York. She listed
her father as JOHN J. GOGDE, born 1870, in Illinois, and her
mother as ESLANDA CARDOZO GOODE, born October 22, 1872, at
Columbia, South Carolina. She indicated that her parents are
deceased, Subject stated she was last married on August 17, 1921,
to PAUL ROBESON, who was born April 9, 1898 at Princeton,
New Jersey. She stated that their marriage has not been termi-
nated and that her husband resides with her at the above mentioned
New York, New York, address.
Regarding her travel plans, subject stated she
intended to depart from the United States on July 10, 1958, at —
the port of New York, New York, for a proposed length of stay
abroad of six months in order to visit England for the purpose
of joining her huSband, There was a written notation on the
application that subject does not intend to fulfill any writing
assignments while abroad, —
Subject refused to answer the questions in the
application, "Are you now a member of the Communist Party?" and
"Have you ever been a member of the Communist Party?" Subject
stated she does not have to answer questions regarding Communist
