Yesterday while talking wi Tale Roos ~
am gave me some information ‘about Paul Robeson. Gandy ee
According to Paul Robeson ts becoming increasingly’ ai
| effective out on the West Coast among the Negroes and especially amon ‘pome
of the Negro clergymen. xplained that this is how he is, jn re ing
his popularity:
“Robeson approached the pastor of one of the more important Ne ro churches
| in Los Angeles did not have the name of the church or the pastgr) and
convinced the pastor to let him sing to his congregation. Robeson expl
‘the pastor could take up a collection for his church and the entire collectt
could keep for his church and his members for he, Robeson, did not want any
of it. “All he wanted to do was to sing and sing and sing. The pastor agreed
and as a result of Paul Robeson's singing he collected over $1,100. This news
spread quickly from pastor to pastor in the Los Angeles area. They saw
possibilities in Paul Robeson for raising money for themselves and their churches,
jand, therefore, he has been receiving invitations to sing which he accepts.
a oy points out that in all these engagements Robeson gets across one or
Mmore points in behalf of communism and Russian viewpoints.
advised me that Paul Robeson is planning to take a trip into Mexico in the near
future and that his wife will go to Jamaica. said that he had met
Paul Robeson and on one occasion in this same connection, Robeson was heard
to say to a person arranging for his Mexico trip: “Book me in as many churches
