The New York "Herald Tribune" issue of
December 31, 1958, page 9, carried the Following L |
under the dateline "London, December 30:"
"PAUL ROBESON, American singer, and his wife
arrived today | in Moscow to start a months stay in the
soviet Union.
An article appeeree in the "News Chronicle,” a a
London, England, daily newspaper, for May 29, 1959, indicat-
ing that Mrs. ROBESON was a speaker at a meeting of the
Interracial Friendship Coordinating Council held in London
on May 28, 1959. According to the newspaper article, this
meeting was held to protest the murder of a British West
Indian named KELSO COCHRANE who resided in the Notting
Hill section of London. Mrs. ROBESON, according to the
article, was cheered by an audience of about 450 white and
colored people when she said, “I believe that KELSO COCHRANE
was killed because he was colored. He died because of.
racial prejudice and hatred."
