September 8, Associated Press, entitled "Paul Robeson
Invited to Visit Communist China". This article reflected
that after the concert, given by PAUL ROBESON, was "raided
by the mobs" on August 27, the Red Chinese Literary Workers!
Association and the Musical Workers’ Association telegraphed
ROBESON their sympathy and consolation and asked him to
visit Communist China. a

The above referred to incident occurred at
Peekskill, New York, on August 27, 1949, and
is described as follows:
On August 27, 1949 |

evening of that date at a benefit show put on by PAUL
ROBESON for the Harlem Chapter of the Civil Rights K
Congress (CRC), and under the auspices of People's
Artists, Inc. This concert was held at Lakeland
Acres near Peekskill, New York. According to
ROBESON started to speak and a brick was thrown Dy an
individual in a veteran's group which was picketing &
the meeting. Violence then broke out and resulted in
injuries to several supporters of ROBESON.
