The Bureau's attention is directed to the fact that PAUL ROBESON ap
Louis in order to fulfil a singing engagement at the Kiel Auditorium on Friday,
January 24, 1947, conducted for the benefit of the People's Hospital.
While in Saint Louis, ROBESON was photographed by various local newspapers carry~
ing a placard in a picket line in front of the Averican Theater, a legitimate
house; ROBESON stated that he marched in the line sponsored by the Civil Rights
Congress of Saint Louis to protest the segregation policy practiced at the theater.
Additional organizations participating in the picket were; Saint Louis Chapter of
the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, The Citizens Coun= — — —
cil for Democracy, a local Commnist Party front, the local chapter of the AYD, the
local chapter of the Civil Rights Congress Committee and the jocal branch of the
National Negre Congress, which latter group is controlled completely by the CP. £>

It 4s noted that the article in the press concerning the picket carried_a state- =u
ment to the effect that the actor engaged for that week, namely WALTEY HUSTON, .
met with representatives of the Civil Rights Congress on Friday evening, January
24, 1947 and expressed himself as in sympathy with the demonstration against Jim
xg Crowism. This quotation wes obtained not from HUSTON but from representatives of
a the Civil Rights Congress in Saint Louis.
