. On July 2&, 19), the Rew York "Herald Tribune"
published an articie entitied “Kegro Article Criticized Reds
. as Intolerant" in which Wright was reported to have stated
that his Communist Party membership roughly covered the perio
froa the latter part of 193< or early part of 1933 to 1940, ar
hia early association with the Comzuriate in Chieagzo was broke
in 1937 when, he aiid, he was “ejected” from the Party. Wrig’
stated that he was re-inetated in 2937 and maintained a relati:
ship with the Party until 1940. However, Wright's name appear
frequently in the "Daily worker" during 1941 and 1942. Wright
Wos reported to be a member of the American Committees to Save
Refugees as of March 6, 1942, and on September 1€, 19c, he
was listed as one of the officers of the Leacue of American
Vriters advocating a second front for Furope. The American
Cormittes to Save Refucees har been cited as a Comminiat
front by the Special Committee on Un-American Activities,
Report of March 29, 1944, and the League of American writers
has been eited asa Comnur:ist by the Attorney General.
The ‘ufust, 194, issue of the "atlantic vonthly”
published an erticle entitled "I Tried tc be a Communist” in
which Wright discussed hia earliest experflences as a Comzuunist
nee Party member in Chicago and tcuched upon the problems he faced
_ in trying te prasent his own idens to the Party. As | result
a ecnsiderable publicity was given tright's articlea in the "Dail:
7 Worker” newaoaper, In his column entitled "Kew Times," publish:

wT Davis, Jr., referred to Wright and to what he ealled Wright's
m “public and wholly unjustifiable attack on the Comnurista."
