° -UNITED STATES GO WENT we eee . _ ——_ i, Memorandum SUBJECT TTORNEY GENERAL'S EFFORTS TO GET INTO BUREAU \GWMNASIUM TUESDAY EVENING, J/31/él. eCicf - Confirming my conversation with you last evening, the Attorney General and at least one of his staff contacted the Bureau switchboard lest night between 7:15 PM and approxi mately 7:45 PM in an effort to get access to the basement gymnasium. A detailed memorandum from the switchboard operator is attached. By the time the call was referred to me (approximately 7:45 PM) the Attorney General and his companions had apparently returned to the . Attorney General's Office with the indication that he would try again the next tday. An addendum a the switchboard operator's memorandum indicates that Mr. Evans was informed by the Bureau operator and got in touch with Mr. Siegenthaler, Executive Assistant to the Attorney General, and that the matter had been taken care of. It will be noted in the switchboard ‘operator's Inemorandum that when the operator went back on the line after having asked the caller to hold on while she located someone to help him, the individual holding the line on the other end was not the same one who had called, but stated that he was Mr. Watson, one of the laborers and that the Attorney, General had gone back to his office. I subsequently got in touch with Mr. Watson who indicated that he had gotten into the picture by giving the Attorney General access to one of the rooms in the basement where he could use a phone and the Attorney General had asked him to hold the line and tell the operator when she came back on the line that he had gone back to his office and that everything was all right and that he would use the gymnasium the next day.
