form for replying back to the White House with a suggestion that it be
answered there since it obviously did not concern the Department of
Justice, was addressed to the White House, concerned the Department of
Defense and the legislative branch of the Government. He said that he
( would check with Mr. DeLoach on this. _
(4)| He noted that the main interest at this time of the Attorney General is
in the campaign in connection with prominent hoodlums. Guthman is
anxious to see that the Attorney General doesn't go too far in public
proclamation as to what he is going to do as he is afraid that the previous
abortive attempt to handle the individuals in the Apalachin case will carry
over thereby subject them to criticism in this endeavor. I pointed out
to hiin that the FBI had been very successful in a long-term policy of not
announcing what they were going to do but instead waiting until their
objective had been accomplished. He said his effort now was to try and
underplay any releases by the Attorney General in connection with this matter.
(5) | Guthman said that he felt woefully ignorant in connection with a number of
things such as international communism and juvenile delinquency which the
Attorney General was going to make several talks about. He said that he
had conferred with Mr. DeLoach about this situation and that he, himself,
would like to get generally briefed so he was on solid ground in discussing
this matter with the Attorney General. I have told Mr. DeLoach concerning
this.
(6) Guthman says that the Attorney General is very easy to work for and that
: he has no hesitation whatsoever in giving his viewpoint to the Attorney Genfal
y who is considering him more than just a press representative but almost
in the position of being an advisor. Guthman feels that the press generally
are in the Attorney General's corner because of the friendliness of the

_ | Comimittee; instead, he feels that the Attorney General's principal problem _
{will be in any relations that he has with Congress. I suggested to Guthman
