U. S. Sen. Robert Kennedy (D-N. Y.1 is
an ambitious man, extremely so, and wiile
he may say otherwise, Bobby appears to he
working toward the Democratic presidential
nomination, if not in 1968, at least in 1972.
But ambition is no valid excuse for forget-
fulness, and it would appear the brother of
former President John F. Kennedy is at
least guilty of that.
_ Dn Dee. 11.°3. Edgar Hoover, director of :
the Federal Bureay of Investigation, labeled...
as, “‘absoiutely -inconceivasle” a statement -<
made by Kennedy. the day before that im- _
plicd Hoover had been misinformed sbout
Kennedy’s knowledge of the use of electronic
* listening devices by the FBI in the 1961-64 -
period. Kennedy was U.S. Attorney Gen-~
eral in that period,
Hoover pointed out that official records *
of the FBI not only reflect discussions be-,
* tween Kennedy and an FBI employe about
-
: showing that {he FBI's use of mike and wire-
tap surveillances was known to and ap-
proved by Kennedy.
The FBI director is a man whom history is _
-* due to list as one of our great Americans.
A‘veteran in his vital and sensitive job, he
is’ not. given to rash statements.
Ment he has made about the former Aitor-
ney Generat is a serious one, and with |
Tfoover's vast legal background it Is certain -
he kas sufficient evidence to substantiate it.
In fact, records of communications bciween —
Kennedy and FBI personnel are available .
and, as Hoover has said, bear the initials
or name of Sen. Kennedy in regard to wire-
' tap activily.
T would seem foolish for the Senalar to
continue to deny he knows anything about
. the 1961-64 eavesdropping trend, some in-
* stances of which could have involved his
‘ campaign to “get the goods’ on Teamster’
Union President James Hoffa with whom he
* has a long-standing | feud, —

The term “untouchable” often is used to |

a-sociciy is so firm that he cannot be -
