liberals, headed by Rober
of the Virgin Islands, signed an open letter to the
Anerican Civil Liberties Union~urging it to resetne
a rescélution to purge the organization of Communists.
The open letter waa signed by a number of’ persons
including Professor Robert S. Lyn :
letter stated in parts; "In the past loyalty 0. the
Bill of Rights in America had been the sole require=
ment imposed by the Civil Liberties Union on tts
members and its offtcers;" and that the phrasing
of the resolution wos 80 wide ag to make the organi-
zation seem “a fellow traveler of the Dies Committees”
fhe letter concluded by stating: "fhe Ciuil Liberties —
Union wos formed tn 1920 to fight post-war Ayeteria. —
It would be a great pity if tt were now to become
vietin af pre-war hysteria."
