The “Worker” on 3-29-43 carried an article on page
1, section 1, entitled: "Farlen Angry at Press Smear, Se ees
Tieup 7ith Southern Reaction," which charged that:'a "smear"
camacign was being directed against Negroes in Harlem by the
Ketropolitan press. According to the article Roy Wilkins,
Assistant National Secretary of the WAACP, had joined with
Ben fichardson, S3enjamin Davis and other prominent Negro
leaders in proposing that a concerted campaign, against the
press 22 organized by civic and la»or organization throughout
the city. The article quoted Wilkins as stating that the
press campaign against Negroes in Harlem was "linked to
He action against labor and post war plans, It is part of
the movement to sez that the little people don't get too
urpity and the Negro peonle are part of the little people.”
“Wilkins also pointed out that the press stories about
Hariem were picked u> throughout the country especially
in the South where they were used a$ a weapon against the
movenent for Jegro rights.
