The 7/15/63 issue of "The Piain Dealer,” Cleveland daily
newspaper, contained an article which revealed that Roy Wilkins was
a
one of the principal speakers at a rally sponsored by the United
Freedom Movement (157-933) (UFM) which was held on 7/14/63 at the
Cleveland Municipal Stadium in Cleveland, Ohio, — -
_ The UFM was reported to be an amalgamation of some thirty
organizations interested in desegregation.

The 7/16/63 issue of the "New York Journal-American" containe
an article entitled "The Negro View: ‘Now or Never’ - Leadership
'Disunity' Grows Graver." This article was the third in a series by
Negro author Louis E. Lomax (62-102926) which disclosed the increasing
friction among Roy Wilkins, James Farmer and Martin Luther King, leader:
of the NAACP, CORE and SCIC respectively. Who would get the credit ‘
for holding mass demonstrations and to whom well-wishers should send :
their money, were at the root of the "current" crisis. In a speech in -

On 8/22/63 AAG, Burke Marshall, Department of Justice,
furnished copies of a telegram dated 7/25/63, and a letter dated
8/14/63, received by the Department from Roy Wilkins, Executive :
Secretary of the NAACP, regarding the arrest and prosecution of Rev. |
Harry Blake (44-23130), NAACP Branch President, in Shreveport, La.,onc :
of breach of the peace. Wilkins said that Blake claimed he was warned -
by the city officials some months before that he would be held respons :
ible for any demonstrations in Shreveport regardless of whether or not |
he participated, Wilkins also stated that a warrant was also issued
for the arrest of Charles Evers, NAACP Field Secretary for Mississippi
because he addressed a public meeting in Shreveport. Wilkins said tha ;
Federal presence and action was badly needed in Shreveport.
