“that the NAACP was distributing antiviolence stickers across the
_ country, one of which read "Hot Head, Hot Lead, Cold Dead."
a "The New York Times" issue of 4/9/68 quoted Roy Wilkins as
saying "millions of Negroes in this country" were opposed to violence
and rejected what he said was the "shrill" contention of militants that
they were taking over the Negro community. Wilkins stated that
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., would be “outraged” by the disorders
following his assassination. He acknowledged that New York's militant
Negroes "have chosen to be good citizens" cooperating with Mayor John
Lindsay in his efforts to keep NYC calm.
