4 Wisconsin Professor Assails” McCarthy’s’Warped Theories‘ By the Associated Press FREDERICK, Md., June 18.— A Wisconsin professor believes|. , Senator McCarthy has “risen to power by making an idolatrous religion out of what he considers io bé patriotism.” The Rev. Dr. Chad\Walsh of Beloit College (Wis.) Thurled the charge here yesterday as he ad- dressed some 400 delegates at a conference of the Washington province of the Episcopal church. “The forces of history would have created an equivalent dem- agogue with a different name” if Senator McCarthy hadn’t come along, the speaker said. He said it was “inevitable in this age of jitters that the politi- cal Neanderthal should arise.” Says Tactics Aid Reds, “If Senator McCarthy were a Russian agent planted in this country to spread disunity and suspicion and prepare the way for a Communist coup d'etat, he could not be doing a more effec- tive job," said Dr. Walsh. He termed McCarthyism “200 per cent Americanism” and said it js a force which “acts as though the end justifies the Mtans-2xthough anything goes {a blow at some one or some thing that is possibly red or reddish . it does not tally well with anything said by the founding fathers." Dr. Walsh said “200 per cent: Americanism creates an atmos- phere of mob justice .. . spreads suspicion between neighbor and neighbor , . encourages the craven timidity of a Casper Milquetoast brands the slightest disagreement with it as virtually equivalent to treason." Nation Is An Idol. The Wisconsin educator de-! clared that “200 per cent Amer- icanism perverts s0 good and wholesome a thing as patriotism into idolatrous worship of the state.
