I on ee cy SUBJECT: COMMUNISTS INTHE STATE DEPARTMENT (ALLEGATIONS BY SENATOR McCARTHY) a . ha ene PURPOSE: o furnish you cumaries tion ap an Bure oa eyning lia: om the Sta men sna as being poss oy identical mess: with three individuals mentioned by Senator McCarthy in his speech in the Ce Senate on June 6, 1950. : BACKGROUND: You will recall that Senator Joseph nuccart made a | speech in the Senate on June 6, 1950, in which he referred to a chart glleged to have been prepared by the Bureau purportedly showing the number of "agents," "Communists," "sympathizers" and "suspects" in the State Department as of May 15, 19476 Senator McCarthy made the statement that three persons listed in the chart are still on the rolls of the State Department. In your memorandum dated June 6, 1950, to Mr. Tolson, Mr. Nichols and myself you pointed out that you had advised Mr. Peyton Ford of the Department that the State Department had tenta ed two of th ersons mentioned by Senator McCarthy as nd ut had no idea as to who the third indi al was. — i i um you penned the notation: "What do qur files show on and — You will also recall that on June 1950, as reflected in my memorandum to you, State Department officials advis of the Liaison Section that | they have been able to identify two of the individuals named by Senator McCarthy, name and rarer sre cae The same officials stated that may or may not be persone + ae : ‘Who has been employed by the Stete_ nt_ sinc this individual has been investigated on | three separate oe etone by the Bureau. a. firet investigated at the ~~. request of the State Department during May and June, 1940, and a copy of the report. reflecting the results of the investigation was forwarded to the State Department on July 26, 1940. 7 again investigated by the Bureau during the period fron March to June, 1942, and copies of the reports covering that investigation tf. wore likewise forwarded to the State Department at that time f _ consideration UJ under the Hatch Act.
