STATE DEPARTMENT a PURPOSE: In accordance with the Director's request to be advised of the number of the 570 persons in the State Depart- ment on whom we have conducted full field loyalty investigations in which there has been some evidence of Communist Party ie | tions, sympathy or association are still employed itn the State Department or some other Government agency, there ts attached hereto ay a blind, memorandum listing 142 of these cases to assist our liaison representative with the State Department in determining the present employment status of these indtviduals. Fy ' BACKGROUND: By memorandum dated March 16, 1951, captioned "Communist Infiltration into the Armed Forces, Industrial Plants, and_ the State Department,” the Director was advised that as of March 13, 1951, there had been a total of 570 doyaity cases conducted on applicant and employees of the State Department in which there had been some evidence of Communist Party affiliation, sympathy or association with individuals alleged to be Communist sympathizers at some time. The Director noted, "Just how many are still employed in State or some other Government agency. H.” y ape.
