(ne ee ee BACKGROUND : Recent hashington, D. C., newspapers have contained articles concerning 23 persons whom Senator McCarthy has claimed are "security risks" in the State Department, Senator HeCarthy has been guoted in ‘ the newspapers as saying that he had made a "reasonable" request that hé be assured that the 23 persons be barred from "secret materials" while their "loyalty" cases were pending before the State Department's - Loyclty-Security Board. The State Department, according to these articles, refused to tell Senator McCarthy what it has done about thesef e3 indtviduals. KeCarthy wos said in these articles to have sent a letter to Dean Acheson listing these 29 persons and demanding tmmediate "cssurances" from Acheson that all have been barred from secret informa, tion and said unless he got such assurances he would make the names public Undersecretcry of State Carlisie H.
