tion of a record of the rzterial which had been furnished to
the State Derartment in these cases and the checkin; by my of
fice staff to make certain that all of the recorded material

Tnereefter, under date of June 27, 1950, Senator
VeCarthy wrote to the lirector of the Federal Bureau of Inves-
tigation inquiring whether that Bureau had checked to make cer-
tgin thet the files were complete and that rothing had been re- ..
moved therefrom. The Director of the Federal Sureau of Investi-
gation, under date of July 10, 1950, advised Senator ¥cCarthy
that the Federal Bureau of Investigation had rade no sveh ex-
arination and was, therefore, not in a position to make any. >
Statement concerning the completeness or incompleteness of |
the State Departrent files. He added a paragraph, however, —
explaining that the Bureau had furnished we at my request a. .- | _

plete, the Attorney General on July 12, 1950, requested the
Director of the Federal Burear of Investigstion to examine
these files. This exanination was made by the Federal 3ureau
of Investigation, and based upon a memorandum from the virector,
