i Senator Raps Hitchcock's J ‘Legal Ethics’ By Scripps-Howard Newspapers Sen. Homer Ferguson (R., Mich.) charges Une tor in the. Mr. Hitchcock . Sen, Ferguson = Government prosecu- merasia case violated *Jleval ethics and was “clearly in contempt of court’ when he made "a deal” io ciose the case in 1945. Sen. Ferguson, a former jud, specifically mentioned Robert i Hitchcock of Buffalo, special 4s- sistant to the Attorney General agd prosecutor in the case. The charge was phrased as a question during a speech by Sen. William Knowland (R., Calif.) de- pnding that the Amerasia case be r@opened. Sen. Ferguson asked if 1Stn. Knowland “did not know it to ibe a fact” that-— “Legal ethics prohibit and make a matter of contempt of court te enter into any such agreement as ‘was made by Mr. Hitchcock.” ‘CONDUCT .,. NOT BECOMING’ He added that “the conduct of the Assistant Aftorney General in this case was not even becoming 4 police court lawyer in any of our .|great cities.” Sen. Ferguson also stafed that it - was “the duly and responsibility of ' the judge to ascertain whether any [promise had been made.” The Senator said testimony taken ir the Amerasia case shows that | the attorney for Philip Jaffe, pub- lisher of Amerasia, was kept in an outer office by Government attor- ineys and was not permitted to go to the office of the clerk of court | to examine documents on file.
