For The Record, It’s Still OOO —
EN. OLIN DBD. JOHNSTON of South
a! Carolina recently sent the State
Department the names of some 80 per-
sons said by Sen. Joe McCarthy in 1950
{io be Communist employes of that de-
partment. Jotnston asked what these
persons’ emp.oy ment and sccurity status
was. Here is what he learned, from
Assistant Secretary of State Thurston
Morton, and announced this week:
Orly 40 of the more than 80 were
erployed by the State Department in
19b0.
Seven had never been employed by
it.

Ten have transfered to other agencies. a
How many of the total were Commu- a
nists? “Not one,” said the Department
spokesman, of the employes named by
McCarthy in those charges was found
ta be “a Communist or disloyal to our
government.”
In other words, despite his more than; ‘
80 times at bat, and numerous fouls,
the Wisconsin senator’s batting average /
is still .000. The monicker “Triple 0. oS oaae
_Joe” still fits. As Sen. Johnston ‘ob- | / i } :
served, this check of the records by a fA
Republican administration ‘should clear
up t this matter for all time.”
