Senator was, of course, indignant and requested that a most therosgh and
complete investigation be made without amy respect to his official position er
any friendship with him. He stated he was mot surprised that euch a charge
had been made aad he enticipated there would be others as sericus, er even
more so, before the end of the forthcoming election. The Senator was most
cooperative and stated that he weuld be available to amawer any questions
desired or make any statement that we saw fit to take from him.
; Lage om the evening of the léth, Inspector DeLoach called
4 me from New Yors and stated they had located and had taken a statement
{rom him. nied having written the letter; ed that it was his signa-
ture; denied he ever seen or met McCarthy; aad branded it as a complete
lie in so far as he was :omcerned. Inspector DeLeach stated that there was ao
question im his mind but that mot written the letter from the interview
wi and there were other developed which ] iastructed Mr. DeLeach
to run down is order to determine, if we could, whe actually did write the letter
aa it obviously was a forgery. Following my comversation with Mr. DeLeach, I
called Senator McCarthy by phone and advised him of the developments for which
he «as quite appreciative.
Oe the morming of January i7, I advised the Attorney
General of developments and of the action which ] had taken in advising Senatur
McCarthy. The Attorney General was appreciative of what had been dome and
urged that the investigation comtinue in am effort te try and identify who had
actually written the letter.
During the course of the 17th, I communicated with Generai
Bolling of G-2 is order to secure the full cooperation of EER ommanding
Officer in Ne« York City. General Belling exteuees the fullest cooperation.
Later in the day, General Belling advised me there was certain information
which he thought I should have incident to this matter and he would give it to
the Bursau's Liaison representative at the P if I had
objection. General Belling did this and later om Jaamary 17,
advised me that General Bolling had been shows the copy of an affidavit
