ie considerable doubt whether the report was reslly Sip OS.
derogatory on a security basis. “2E r a. *
Walle this does not apply to Departeental peraonnel, i
the fact should be noted as demonstrating a further relf-
ance upon FSI by the Departaent, Presumably, this check
ie made by FBI as « matter of accomodation, not of duty.
Wo control us exercised by the Department over the inves-
tigetion.
(eo) It is important to note that the Departaent is en-
tirely end prectically exclusively dependent on FBI for
the type of information which comes from surveillance,
wide coverage, and the use of unusual methods of interro-
gation and investigation. CSA appears to have neither the
— experience nor the facilities to do that type of work and
it 1s apparently not used by any one in that type of vork.
FBI is the sole repoaitory of such information, therefore,
as the identity of Gommunist Party menbers, of syapath-
isers and fellow travelers, of espionage cases, end of
undisclosed foreign agents.
(ey) FRI has prepared a chart, now in the possession of
pee, which purports to shov a muster of "agents", '
"Comuniste", "synpathisera", and “suspects” in the State
Departaent as of May 15, 1947. The tabulation shows
Agents=- =< --- 2 - = 2
Comunists- - - -- = - “13
Syupathisers- - == - = ~l4
Suspects- - = =< -- = <7
