Were the Republicans “whitewashing” a Democrauc administration? bo Tell them—that in a specch made on the floor of Congress by Repre- sentative Jonkman, Republican of Michigan, (of a sub-commitice of the Conmnittee on Forcign Affairs investigating these same charges) page 9793 of the Congressional Record of August 2, 1948, said: “But before the 80th Conpress adyourns, ] want the Members to know that there is one Deparunent ino which the koown or reasonably suspected subversives, Communists, fellow travelers, svmpathizers and persons whose rvices are not for the best interests of the United States, have been swept out. That is the Department of State.” 3. Tell them—what Senator Lodge, Re pibdican member of the investigating sub-camimitice, had to say, as quoted from the Congressional Record of Juls 21, 1950: “Oo. bdid not find any Communists in the State Departent but Twent to all lengths to which T think any man could go, in that IT personally interviewed the State Department agents and special agents covering a large part of the United States, Europe, Africa and the Middle East, and ] asked every one of them whether thes knew of any Comiiunists in the State Departinent.
