Allegation by Senator McCarthy
"Case No. 47. This individual was employed in March 19), as
Division Assistant in the Division of Internal Security. The House
Un-American Activities Committee advised on August 18, 1917, that
an admitted former Communist Party member was formerly associated with
this individual in Communist activities in Washington, D. C. This
individual's husband admitted having been a member of the Communist
Party. The husband now has s highly confidential position with the
Navy Department. The file indicates that this individual has been
associated with a group of known Communists.
"Keep in mind, Mr. President, that she was given a job in
the Division of Internal Security."
ta report dated July 16, 1947, states that in 1941 a Senate
investigating committee had found that both this individual and
her husband were members of the Communist Party. A report dated
September 15, 1947, by a Government investigative agency, advised
that a reliable informant reported this individual as a Communist,
and that she has been recently contacting a member of the Soviet
espionage ring. This individual is still in a highly paid job in
the State Department."
Possible Identification
A review of the Bureau's files indicates this individual is
apparently identical with Dr. Esther Caukin Brunauer. The Bureau's records |
reflect that a loyalty investigation was conducted on this individual in 1918.
According to information developed during the course of this
investigation, Dr. Brunayan. was never known to be a member of the
