—~"McCARTHY S FACTS
| Miss Miriam M. De Haas, a suspended fed- |
‘eral civil service emplove in the joyalty re-|
view board, has resigned from the govern-
ment service after publishing an advertise-
ment in the TimesHerald at her own ex-
| Dense. stating that she had scen to it that;
Sen. McCarthy of Wisconsin obtained infor-;
‘mation concerning Communist infiltration of |
the New Deal. i
Miss de Haas had been relieved of her jou‘
on suspicion only that she had given some |
‘of his facts to McCarthy. This, as we have.
Noted, was ah example by the Adininistration |
itself of what it likes (o call “McCarthyism.” |
| Mr. Truman’s civil service commission had no }
| proof af its suspicions. Miss dé Haas supplied .
ithe only evidence it obtained thru her own '
ipaid advertisement.
' She indicated thal she had sent the facts
-to MeCasthy indirecUly, that her information
was specific, concrete, correct, and true, and
that what has been conveyed to the public
onty scratches the surface of the evidence
of Communist penetration of the government.
The significance of this statement ought
not. to elude the citizens, and, especially, Mc-
Carthy's detractors. The information which,

he used, not knowing the source, was the}
very information which was in the possession
,of Mr. Truman's own loyaity board. What
tact would vouch for its accuracy more than |
that?
* Miss de Haas’ statement puts the loyalty
board in a strange light and raises a funda-
mental question concerning Lhe good faith of
the Administration's professed desire to be
rid of Sovict agents and sympathizers. The
hoard did mot itself use the information
azainsl those who were implicated. AH the
Administration did after McCarthy's recitals
was to charge him with defaming loyal em-
ployes, altho his information against these
jobholders was that which the Administration
itself professed.
There are intimations that the Juslice de-
partment proposes to prosecute Miss de Haas.
If so, the American people will have some
questions to ask. One, in particular, would |
be this: Are the Communists and fellow
travelers in the Administration to go scot |
free, and is an executive board that refused to
do its duty lo escape all criticism, while the j
citizen who acted to expose the Reds is pil-!
loried? If that is what is intended, {t will)
confirm thal disloyalty is nurtured by the |
Administration. — >
