The Inquest Rules
Kennedy Wants
BOSTON—Senator Edward M. Ken-
nedy has asked the Supreme Judicial
Court of Massachusetts to set ground
rules for any inquest into the death of
Mary Jo Kopechne.
Specifically, an attornéy- representing
Mr. Kennedy requested:

other potential witnesses at the inquest
argued that their clients’ constitutional
rights would be seriously compromised
under ‘ules set by Judge Boyle,
Senator Kennédy, his, counsel said,
would be “the focal point” in “an ac-
cusatory proceeding which could iesult
in criminal action”
Joseph J. Flurley, an assistant attorney
general who represented Judge Boyle,
said- an inquest could cleat persons of
suspicion. He added:
“Kennedy. himself, or télevision, re-
ferred to ‘innuendo and’ whispers and
gossip. Am ‘inguest tould setye to end
this and: to protect and’ clear the good
name of Miss Kopechne as’ wéli.”
