Dear Sir:
Reference is mde to Bureau letters of February 13 and March
; - 30, 1955, referring to the source of the information upon which certain
{ newspaner articles were based, and possibly indicating that this infor-
a ~ mation a5 to Bureau a: tivities thad been furnished to the press by
_ ; sorieone at Chicago.
I have given this matter considerable thoucht and attention
” ag well as makine certain discreet inquiry, and also by m kine what I
belicve were tests, inferences wich rmi-ht land to someone vivine out
this information, provided it wa anyone connected rith the OC icaros
office, any in my oninion it is very doubtful that anybody at the
Chicago apice is intentionally fur ishing any information which mircht
reach theFnewspaoers.
In most of the instances where stories have appeared, rhile wa
have no definite information indicatin:: the source of these, it is
. annarent that the informtion indicated could very well have been ob-
,7 tained from other sources or circumstances tama contact with sonebody
Spe - eaesociatad with the office. The on'y matter which seems to be imnossible
a of satisfactory explanation is the information which was given out ss
— to the fact that Arthur Barker was held at the Chicago office, as to
~ which 1t is noted several daya after he was Held, the newsp ene-s made
t. Sf inquiry and obtained copies of his Identification Order, and it is
Po possible that they may have exhibited his picture in the neighborhood
ue } in which the raids were conducted on the night of January 8, 1935, resul-
ting in an identification to them by some person who knew of him having
hean soprehended on the nirht of January 8th, or at least knew of hin
having been & resident at 432 Surf Street, or a visitor at 3920 Pine ns
