Now 35 years old, Maddox was
former owner of the Circus cafe

: Maddox rose to prominence as a
protege of Al Capone. After the
massacre he was arrested and quiz-
‘zed, but released for lack of evi-
dence. Later he was indicted for
_assault to kill but was not brought
ig trial. He still is listed as a public
enemy by the Chicago Crime com-
mission.
} Harry Ditchburne, former esrist-
‘ ant state’s attorney who conducted
the investigation into the massacre,
disclosed today that when investi-
gators from the homicides quad
lrushed from headquarters in the
- ‘central police station to answer the
massacre call they rode down the
same elevator with Maddox, who
had appeared ‘in court on a disor-
derly conduct charge, and his at-
torney.
Maddox turned to his attorney
