The Attornsy General called and etzted he had heard that there has wX
been some discussion about a report on H:artin Lather King before ths Rooney -
Comniittee and also some discussicn about the Department of Jurctice wanted
to recall that report and he, the Attorney Geacral, wanted to recall our cone
vorsation about it because someoas got tho iinpression he, the Attorney General,
requested it be recalled, I told the Attornoy General that the only discussion
beiore the Rooney Committee was cif the record; that there was ingulry off
the record as to the association of iartin Luther King with the Communlat -
moveinent and I reviewed tha infarzintion that wo had developed tn the monograph
and said copies of the monograph hid been cclivered to the Socretary of Deienge,
the Secretary of State, andthe White House, and that it was later recalled
because it was feared it mizht leak out. I stated one of the members of the
Committee, a Republican, mado tho state:nent he thought it ought to be exposed,
and Chairman Rooncy eaid he thougit information of that kind should be
kext in the back of the head rather than come out as public information. I i-
gtated I mado the remark that that was the intention in recalling the document.
The Attorney Goneral stated he understands thet thay are saying he had requested
tt be withdrawn. I stated it was nothing af the kind; that in other words he,
the Attorney General, and I had tall:cd about it several times and ho had |
questioned the wisdom of its distribution and 1 indicated I would have the copies -
withdrawn andIdid. The Attornzy Gencral stated he did not want to have the
idea that he had requested #. I etated both of us had feared a leak might get
Out from the Departments which bad copies of the monograph; and if it RS
happened during a sensitive time of nezctiations going on withthe Negro . ss
