- Department's extreme interest in this particular file and how
it is visualized that the Levison investigation would have any
bearing on the completeness of our investigation of the
sassassination of King. lkurphy responded that its interest in
the Levison casc stems only from their interest in insuring we
originally had a firm basis for the King investigation, Their
interest is also tied in with an earlier suspicion that Levison
might have been a Bureau informnt. (This matter was covered
in @ prior_menorandum reporting Pottinger's inquiry on this bee
point and dispelling any euch thought to Pottinger,
kiurphy incicatec that if and when tapes are to be listened to,
it is their intention that it be. done only by Pottinger.
~ Murphy was advised that because the Department's _
original request in this mtter dated 12/4/75 asked for
inventories “in your field offices," we had canvassed only
ficld offices, to the exclusion of Legats. He was told of our
Procedure on file destruction by’ Legats, but that there night
be sone mtcrial “in sone Legats' offices, particularly in
Lickico City. He indicated that for the tire our carvass of
fielc offices only is sufficient and that we should take ro
action as to inventorying Legats' offices,

Finally, Murphy was briefed concerning certain mterial
in our files in lxte 31963 and early 1964 which refer to sone
differences between Mr. Hoover and the the then Domestic
Intelligence Division on the King ane related investigetions,
lurphy was told that some of Mr. Hoover's remarks written into
the files were of a sarcastic nature and for a full understanding
he should be avare of -the atmosphere then existing between
Hoover and then Assistant Director Willian C.. Sullivan. in that
they apparcntly disagreed on the interpretation of conminist
