a”. Le | - ' ‘ 1 Nae Fd . : whe: a. 7 * “Ss J ° -3- amazin’, sum of a billion dollars a wonth. The Government itself vould lose in taxes two hundred eighty million dollars every 30 days. That is the evidence here of the irreparable injury that would come to the iJation--not to speal: of the peril to the health and safety of our people. The bituminous coal mines for the most part are worked by miners affiliated with the United Mine Workers of America, one of the defendants here. "The economic creed of the United Mine Workers"—-so says the United Iiine Workers Journal for June 1, 1946, is—"no contract - no work." Ifa new agreement has not been signed before the termination of the ola, the men are advised that there is no contract-~and they quit. In fact, the cry of "no contract" is the signal for "no work." It is a matter of cacnon Imevledge that work stoppaces have occurred at almost regular intervals in the last fewyears in the bitwzinous coal fields. In each instance it was announced that there was no contract, and the nen quit work in the mines. Upon such an announcenent, worl: stoppages occurred even in the most crucial days of the war. And one such stoppage occurred on or about April 1, 1945. That work stoppage was the predecessor of the stoppare of November 1946, which gave rise to these proceedings. The stoppare of April 1946, was in itself highly serious, even thouch it occurred in the spring of the year when the need for coal is not as sreat as in the winter. It resulted in the cessation in the flow of coal from the mines to the railroads, to shipping, public utilities, industrial plants, and the facilities owned and operated by the Government, as well as to its establish- ments overseas. The testinony shows that only ten per cent of the miners © + worked during the month of April.
