From the outset Justice Stqne showed an
open-mindedness toward growth and @ liberal
outlook upon constitutional problems. This
newspaper happens to believe that he was
right in these early years of his service, and
ne while it has been unable to agree with all his
later opinions in support of New Deal legis-
lation, it is glad to record its complete faith |,
i in his integrity of mind and his conscientious |.
‘i devotion to the cause of constitutional govern-
laws put a heavy strain upon the courts of the
nation. Destruction has outrun construction
tn the development of constitutional interpre-
tation. The need is stroug for a new unity in
Bupreme Court doctrine, based on @ clearer
philosophy of government than has yet been

of political change.
It will be in Chief Justice Stone's power, as
the head of a virtually new bench, to take the
directing lead in this new iabor. The country
