WASHINGTON, June 22—The ac-
_} cession of Attorney Genvwral Jack-
t son to the Supreme Court means
that a new chief law enforcement
officer of the Federal government | '
must soon be chosen and today
Speculation centered ground the
name of Francis Biddle, now Solici-
tor General.
An ardent New Dealer, and a
faember of a famous American
family, Mr. Biddle was expected by
many to be the Administration's
choice.
In official circles it waa widely ‘i
thought also that Charles Fahy, fort
mer general counsel of the Nation- |.
al Labor Relations Board and now
assistant solicitor general, would
step Into Mr, Biddle's place. + |
Ben Cohen of the celebrated team |-
of Gorcoran-and-Cohen alec waa
mentioned as a possible choice for
Solicitor General as was Dean Ache-
son, now in the State Department.
The speculation followed the dis-
closure of Mr. Jackson's elevation ,
to the court in which the only two!
surprises were thoae of rank and |
date. .
When the news reached the de’
partment, Mr. Jackson was show-
ered with congratulationa by his
staff. In a formal statement he
said:
“Tam glad, the Senate willing, to
turn to work of an exclusively legal
character, Iam alao glad to go on
a bench over which Harlan Stone
presides. Hig experience, his rec-
ord, and his character make his
