W, Leavitt Re: Washington Star Article ey Aske reak In OK As Agent" August 26, 1976 66-8160 DETAILS: OK As Agent," Washington Star Stafi Writer Jerry4Oppenhe imer reported on August.26, 1976, that a "knowledgeable source" said that while SAC, Birmingham, during the period 1957 to 1960, Director Kelley had approved a request seeking FBIHQ euthorizati for a break-in, possibly against a communist or Ku Klux Klan group, INTD conducted reviews of numerous files, indices and other material over the past 12 months for information concernin entries and no information has been located indicating the Birmingham Office ever communicated to FBIHQ a request to conduc an entry against any group, A review of FBIHQ file (66-2542-3) dealing with confidential informants, showing assignment of symbol numbers to all types of informant. coverage including "anonymous sources" and “highly confidential sources," failed to show the assignment by the Birmingham Office of. any symbol number to activity which could be interpreted as possibly involving surreptitious entry /@ A review of informant symbol number indices maintained by the CI-5 Section of the INTD which records the assignment of symbol numbers to sources other than Live sources (predominantly electronic surveillance matters) failed to locate any informant symbol number card for the Birmingham Office which could possibl be interpreted as referring to a surreptitious entry, Informant Symbol number cards for the Birmingham Office in this file begin fs early as 1943, Fieldwide surveys of March 18, 1976, and April 13, 197 for SAC knowledge of entry activity and for documents pertaining to entry activity, respectively, met with negative responres fro the Birmingham Office, CONTINUED = OVER
