It was suspended in all offices except New York and Washington, D. C., in 1963 and was discontinued there in July, 1966. } Our decision to discontinue these surveys cane , indirectly as a result of a Senate Committee's (Senator Edward | Long’s committee) probeinto the subject of mail covers. | During these committee hearings which took place in March, 1965, ; our coverage came close but was not dragged into the hearings; ; however, Senator Long had indicated to the then Attorney General, | "There were some Bureau Agents as potential witnesses and that. ; they would take the Fifth Amendment rather than testify as to | any national security matter."
