Cleveland ure g. a Gallagher Wannall Septenber, ie, "397s ee ee The Federal Bureau of Investigation has conducted 97 surreptitious entries since January 1, 1966, in connection with investigations handled ender authority of a "court order and in accordance with provisions of Title IIX of the Omnibus Crins Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968. All of these entries vere for the purpose of interception of coral communications, At the conclusion of the court-authori zed period of interception, a second entry was made for the purpose of retrieving the electronic devica. nee i i 1 1 1 In compliance with provisicas of the shove Act, subjects of interception were advised no later than $0 days after termination of the surveillance that their conversations were intercepted by the Government. All interceptions were made on the basis Of criminal activity on the part of subject individuals, No organisations were targets of the entries. The specific purpose of each entry was for the installation of an electronic device to intercept oral communications. Wo other organizations of government, \. local or Federal, promoted or participated in the entries. Approval for each entry is handied in accordance with provisicus of Title TIX of the above Ast. At the fisid office level, Special Agents coordinate with the appropriate United States Attorney in the judicial district where installation is desired in the preparation of affidavits regarding the desired interception. The affidavit is forwarded to the FBI Headquarters for review by appropriate supervisory personnel, Legal Cousel Division, and the Director. Thereafter, the affidavit is forwarded to the’ Department of Justice for approval of the Attorney General. Assoc. Die. Finally, approval is obtained from aU. 8.
