ASPEN, Colo. — Accused
Killer Theodore Bundy, cap
tured early today by sheer
coinciklence, faces new charges
of felony escape, first- degree
burglary, felony theft and mis-
demeanor theft.
Bundy had managed to elude
lawmen and tracking dogs in a
massive six-day manhunt, and
then was pickat tp about 2 a.m.
on the outskirts of Aspen by twa
deputy sheriffs cn another as-
signinent who noticed a car
being driven erraticaliy.
When they stepped the car
on Colorado 82. the deputies
recognized Bundy as the driver
and arrested him without resis-
tance. He was not armed.
Bundy told investigators
today he had been physically
and mentally preparing himself
for escape for some time, a
spokesman said.
The 30-year-old former law
student said he escaped be
cause, “I didn't want to go back
to jail. It was just too pretty
outside.”
After his recapture, Bundy
was taken to the courtroom of |
District Court Judge George
Lohr to be advised of his richts:
Seven_armed deputy sheriffs
stood guard as Lohr told Bundy
what he would be charged with.
Arraignment was set fer
Thursday.
Bundy escaped from the law
library in {he same courtroom
where he appeared today.
‘Utah officials said today it is
unlikely they will attempt to
bring Bundy directly back to
Utah.
Bundy was convicted in Utah
of kidmaping a young Salt Lake
City girl in 1974, and then had
been extradited to Aspen,
where he was charged with
first-degree murder in the 1975
death of a Mivhigan nurse who
was vacationing in Aspen.
He escaped June 7 by jump
ing from a second-story window
in the Pitkin County Courthouse
while he was left unguarded
during a recess in a pre-trial
hearing.
Bundy was dirty, unshaven,
had lost 20-25 pounds and had a
hurt leg when he was captured,
said Colleen Curtis, spokesman
for the Pitkin County Sheriff's
Office. He had a bandage on his
nose, but it was apparently only
for disguise purposes.
She said officers thought he
might be under the influcnce of
