On Octover 10, 1979, Gary Benjamin Popkin, Vice President of the Oakiand Chapter of the Hells Angels Hotorecycle Club (HANC) and a fugitive since June 13, 1979, was arrested by Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) personnel at an apartment in Oakland, California. Twelve days later, Aleohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) personnel arrested Sergey Clement Waiton and James Ezekicl Drandes, at a private garage and storage type facility at Fremont, California. On novenuer 7, 197°, Blair William Guthrie was arrested at a motel in Rohnert Park, California, by detectives from the Sonoma County, California Sheriff's Department. A trial for 18 of the indicted defendants commenced begzinning with the first week of October, 1979 and is expected to continue until sometime after the first of the year. A second trial will be necessary for the above cefendants who were recently arrested ahd any others who might be arrested prior to March, 1980 which is the tentative date scheduled for the second trial. The HAMC has established a Freedom Defense Fund care of Post Office Box 5295 at Oakland, California, for the purpose of receiving contributions from those groups and individuals who may be sympathetic with the WAC or other individuals who may be critical of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act in peneral. The HANC has actively sought support from their domestic chapters in the United States and it is probable that similar assistance has been sought from their chapters overseas. The San Francisco Division of the FBI has received no information since the date of the last memorandum which would indicate that any of the furitives have taken refuge in Australia.
